Fast track to launching yourself into the T-shirt industry

May 31, 2012

Have you ever considered the possibility of starting your own clothing line that caters to the Indianapolis market?

How many times have you been out in a public forum and noticed someone wearing a T-shirt with either a very clever saying or a great looking logo?
You then say to yourself, “Why didn’t I think of that?”

I am Mike and have been in the custom screen printing and custom embroidery business for well over 15 years.

I have catered to countless clientele who have decided that they wanted to take a shot at launching their own T-shirt design or clothing line.

Some of these guys had tremendous artistic ability and came up with a design that was extremely impressive and potentially marketable.

These people have all this God given talent and just did not know how to channel it.

what they fail to realize is that marketing is the transmission that makes the engine go places.

It doesn’t matter how big and powerful the engine is, if it is not hooked up to the transmission.
The engine in itself can’t go anywhere on its own.

Here’s a few group examples of what I am describing.

I once heard that McDonald’s sells more chicken than any fast food restaurant in the world.
I heard that they accomplish this amazing feat thanks to a marketing campaign called the McNugget.

My personal opinion is that they are nothing special.
However, it seems like every 10-year-old and under needs to have them as often as their parents will allow them to.

So it seems to me that they took what I would consider to be a very average product and marketed it with superior excellence.

Another example would be the Nike logo.
Earlier in this blog, I made mention of people with amazing artistic talent submitting amazing images that they wanted to put on a T-shirt for resell.

Let’s evaluate the Nike logo.
It appears to me that it is nothing but a swoosh.
What can we learn from this?
The lesson to be learned is that it does not necessarily have to be a complicated masterpiece.

Sometimes less is more.

They took the simplest of images and marketed it with excellence.

It doesn’t always come down to what is on the T-shirt or the hat.

You are trying to create and sell an image.

The fact is that it is not an easy endeavor.
If it was, everybody would be doing it.

A good place to start would be to do your market research and identify a specific age demographic.

what sector of society are you trying to reach ?
Come up with a plan.
I once heard it said that those who fail to plan, plan to fail.

When it comes to marketing, there are many different directions that you can go.
Whatever direction you decide to take, it is going to be a calculated risk.

Whether or not it was a good investment or not, will simply come down to your return.

Technology has given us advantages today like never before in the history of mankind.

A good potential first step in this process might be to create a website with all your different T-shirt designs.

I would start locally, attempting to reach a local Indianapolis market.
It is much easier to do this then initially trying to reach out to a national market place, let alone the entire world.

The first lesson to be learned with Internet marketing is that the quality of your website is important, but not as important as the ability for people to find it.

For example, try and put yourself in the mindset of your potential customer who is looking to find you.

What search terms are they going to use to try and find you?

A relevant suggestion might be custom tee shirt Indianapolis.
They could potentially type in funny T-shirts Indianapolis.
Or it could be one of hundreds of different possibilities.

It can be a million-dollar site but if nobody can get there to find you, it is not going to benefit you.

On the other hand, it can be a very simple website that only costs you $5000 or $600, and it can be an overwhelming success.
