Small Business and Technology

December 2, 2015

I have been self-employed my entire adult life as well as done a lot of different things. I can remember just getting out of high school as a young 18-year-old kid who had no idea what he wanted to do for a living. All my friends were going off to college and I was able to get a job at a local gym. I started as a cleanup boy and within three months, I was promoted to assistant manager and was running my own club. What a great job that was! It was an alternate club which meant that one day it was open for women so I would get that day off and the next day it was open for men which meant I had to be there. The guy who hired me really didn’t want to work there in the first place so he would take off in the middle of the day and stay away for hours at a time which meant there was nobody there to sell memberships to the people that were coming in the door for the first time. I said to myself I can do that so I went into the interview and started my sales pitch. I actually surprised myself because I sounded really good and learned that I had a knack for selling. This was a very high-pressure job because the owners would call you up about every couple hours and ask you what you have sold. If you were to go a couple weeks without selling any memberships, then you were soon out of a job. I ended up working at this place for approximately a year and a half which was pretty good considering the average life expectancy of a gym manager at this particular place was only about four months.

I then ventured out to start my own business and I was very aware that sales and marketing are the two most important components of building a successful Indianapolis T-shirt printing company. You could be the best at whatever it is you do but if that phone didn’t ring and you can’t sell it, then you are soon going to be out of business. I realize that there are no guarantees when it comes to marketing. Anything and everything you do is going to be a calculated risk. That being said, some things are safer than others.

I have embraced the advantages that modern technology has provided. People get on a search engine and type in Indianapolis screen printing company or digital T-shirt printing and all of a sudden they see our website. It wasn’t long ago that I used to cold call by going around the neighborhood and knocking on doors and then introducing myself. I would ask them if the next time they were in the market for some custom embroidery or screen printing if I could simply just have a chance to give them a quote. If I can’t give you a better deal than what you’re currently getting, there is no reason to use us. However, I would try to create a strong incentive to make it worth their while to give us a shot. That was hard work and very time-consuming. We get the overwhelming majority of our work two ways. The first way is repeat and the second way is referral.
